WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

"meeting at whakatane The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women's Imstitute was held on June 6, Mrs V. Stewart presiding. Owing to the inclement wea-i ther the atendance was not as good as usual. The. meeting opened with the Institute song followed by,, the Aspirations read by all present. A! number of apologies were received from members. The minutes of the\ last meeting were read and confirmed. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Miss Runciman for: packing and dispatching the paper mache articles to an Island Mission hospital. A letter Avas received from the local Red Cross Committee thanking the. members of the Institute for their help with the patriotic knitting. Three new members were elected to the Institute. A travel talk on 'Edinburgh' was given by Mrs Caisley and was mucli. enjoyed. A demonstration on looss covers given by Mrs Dixon was followed with interest. The Roll Call 'Scotch Jokes' was well responded to. Mrs Drube sang two Scottish songs in her usual charming manlier. Miss Lennie Butler next en-* tertained with two highland dances. Mrs Cole and Mrs Murphy were appointed delegates to a meeting to be held re the holding of a Drama Festival this year. During afternoon tea Masters Errol Petty and lan McKenzie rendered some spirited tunes on the bagpipes. Mrs Stewart thanked all who had helped to make the Scottish afternoon such a success and Mrs King Senr. for arranging the hall etc. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a pleasant afternoon, .to- a. close. The Arts and Crafts Circle meet on the second Wednesday and ther Garden Circle on the third Tuesday at Mrs Mulholland's residence. The competition results were:— A, 3 girdle scones: Mrs Hannah i? Mrs Comer 2. B, 3 Calendulas: Mrs Moran 1; Mrs Zinsli 2. C, 3 red beet: Mrs Fennell 1; Mrs Hannah 2. The Garden Circle was held at the residence of Mrs Cairns. Seasonal readings were read by the members on general work in the garden and what to plant in May. The Roll Call 'Garden superstitions was responded to by all. The competition results were: —A, Best 'Chrysanthemum: Mrs Mulholland 1; Mrs Cairns 2; Mrs Hannah 3. B, Three kumeras: Mrs Stewart. . Afternoon tea Avas served by the hostess and a pleasant afternoon brought to a close.

MEETING AT WAIMANA The monthly meeting of the Waimana Institute was held in tire hall on Wednesday, June 7, Mrs Wylde presiding. Motto, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." The: meeting was opened with the singing of "Oh God our help in Ages Past" and the Oder to Friendship. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary read a letter from. Mrs Frost of Taneatua in which she kindly donated to the soldiers parcel} fund her expenses of a previous visit. Suggestions for the birthday meet-* ing were brought forward and it was decided to invite, sister Institutes. Miss M. Woolfleld read the Dominion president's letter and Mrs T. Wardlaw extracts from soldiers let-r ters. There were two interesting demonstrations—Mrs Hewitt demonstrated pastry making and Mr N. McDonald the pruning of roses. The hostesses then served a delightful afternoon tea after which the? competitions were judged by Mr and Mrs McDonald, the results being:— Tray cloth: Mrs Hewitt 1; Mrs T. Wardlaw 2; Miss Mavis Wardlaw 3. Ginger bread: Mrs Hewitt 1; Mrs Stevenson 2; Mrs T. Wardlaw r 3. Double flower: Mrs F. Bell 1; Mrs T. Wardlaw 2. Single flower: Mrs F. Bell 1; Mrs Hewitt 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Best vegetable: Mrs F. Bell 1; Mrs Stansbury 2; Mrs Hewitt 3. Mrs November obliged* with two songs Avhile Mrs Heather accompanied her at the piano. The, meeting: closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
