PATRIOTIC EFFORT
ACTIVITIES AT THORNTON The Thornton Ladies' Patriotic Committee arranged a Bring and Buy afternoon on Wednesday May 24, which proved a gVeat. success, the stalls' being filled with all man" ner of good things from cream puffs to pumpkins, practically everything receiving a ready sale. In the even* •ing a dance was held, this being well patronised. The first MonteCarlo was won by Mrs Fisher and Mr Spence. A Statue Waltz, which proved very popular to both dancers and spectators, was Avon by Miss H. Newton and Mr Sowell. A second Monte Carlo was won by Mr Jackson and partner. Half way through the evening, a presentation from the residents of Thornton was made to Pte Harry Fisher, who Js- to leave shortly. Mr S. G. Spence, President of the Thornton Patriotic Committee, in presenting Pte Fisher with the usual token, wished him the best of luck and a sal'c and speedy return. Pte Fisher replied suitably. The drawing of numerous raffle.: interspersed the dancing, the lucky winners being: Box of Home-made Sweets, Mr Davis; Tray, Mrs' Reynolds; Picture, Maureen Sullivan; Rooster, Margaret McDonald and Dressing Table Set, Mrs R. Brewer. Many thanks'are due to the donors of the articles rallied. The Premier Band supplied the' music and it was greatly appreciated. Patriotic funds benefitted substantially from the result of this functions.
