Local and General

Land Girls' Club It has been proposed by several members of the Womens' Land Service to form a club whereby girls belonging to t.lie division can get together and organise social evenings and other functions. If any Land Girls in Whakatane and outlying districts are interested in forming a club, they should either send their addresses or get in touch with Miss B. Collins, c/o Grieg's Estate, Thornton. Brickbat for County Council "I don't mean this personally about the Whakatane County Council I'm speaking of them as a body in their dealings with the Maori. They have got claws, like; a hawk, and they seem to want always to do the minimum for the Maoris and to take the maximum payment for it." In this manner Sir Apirana Ngata took the gioves when addressing the Hon. H. G. R. Mason regarding the local Maori problems last Saturday morning. Irresistablfe Literature Evidence of the fascination that comics hold for young people was seen on Thursday afternoon when a youngster was noticed kneeling outside a stationer's in the Strand oblivious to wind and weather absorbed in "The Adventures of Buck Rogers." If the life of William the Conqueror or other historical characters could be portrayed in the same fashion, his toy lessons would no doubt be. much more interesting to the youthful mind. Speeding Motorists Complaints from a number of residents of O'hope have been received concerning the manner in which motorists speed along the beach road, especially at the Western end. On this part of the road particularly, thick lupins on either side serve to narrow it and to a certain extentblock the driver's vision. If a child playing on the side were to go to cross the road a vehicle would have little chance of stopping in time-. It therefore behoves motorists to proceed carefully along these sections, and to obey the sjoeed limits set.
