ELIGIBILITY TO RIDE

STATUS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN INTERESTING POINTS RAISED An interesting point raised by Mr L. _ at _tlie recent tjgmbkiefV meeting of delegates from school committees \last week when the question of school transport was under discussion related to the children who were considered eligible to be taken by bus to school. He pointed out that there were many parts of the County not covered by school bus s-ervice at all, and he Would like these points considered. Mr J. W. Wilson (Whakatane), said that according to the regulations, children under the age of. ten years were expected to walk two miles, while those over the age of ten Avere expected to walk three. There was a practice, he knew, of children deliberately being sent past their nearest school to one in a larger centre, and this would have to be stopped as it was a big contributing factor to the present congestion. If at the forthcoming conference of school committees the names of children who were regularly doing this were submitted, steps would be taken to ensure that they attended their own local school.
