Stock Sales on Page 8 We draw readers attention to the forthcoming stock sales in. this district, details of which are to-day advertised on page 8. To-morrow's Auction* Sale A. J. Canning and Co advertise in to-day's issue the sale at 11 o'clock on Saturday morning, of a nice Morris; "Isis" car, 4 very good tyres and 2 spares and the car's condition generally should ensure a keen sale. The reserve is low. Noxious Weeds Prosecution A further district farmer to be penalised for failure to clear ragwort from his land at Te Teko, within a specified period was Ernest I. Cartier who at the last, sitting of the Whakatane Magistrate's Court was fined £3 and costs. Competition Winners The winners of the competitions drawn at the combined R.S.A. and Winter aShow dance held a short time ago are as under: Set of Carvers, Mr Norman Carter; Handbag, Mrs Sumner; Canteen of Cutlery, Mrs Pickering, Auckland. Awakeri Farewell This Evening A farewell gathering of great interest to residents of Awakeri takes place in the local hall this evening. The guests will be Mr and Mrs Dodunski and family who after six years residence in the district during which they have made countless friends are leaving shortly for Auckland. Prompt Balance Sheet General congratulations were once again extended the town clerk, Mr D. V. Saunders, at the meeting of the Wha'katane. Borough Council last week on the manner in which he had produced the balance sheet and statement of account in a little over two weeks after the end of the financial year. Donors Identity Wanted An unknown well-wisher of the Whakatane Boys Band recently left a handsome, silver mounted ebonv baton at Mr A. J. Canning's residence as a donation. As there is no better method of learning liis identity, than by giving the matter publicity it is hoped that the. person concerned will make himself known. He will probably be interested to learn also that the baton has been duly presented and will be regularly used in future. Boy's Band Soloists Favourable comment was expressed by many people at the Boy's Band recital held last Thursday evening in the Parish Hall on the standard of the soloists who gave items during the evening. These boys were trained by Mrs Mayo who for many months now, has given of her time atid talent towards perfecting them in this type of work, and much credit, is certainly due to her for the fine performance put up by them. Its Not Done ! The unusual spectacle of two members of the Manpower Committee, engaged in a heated exchange', over the technical interpretation of a clause in an engineer's agreement, brought a highlight to the dull proceedings in the recent hearing of an appeal case, in the Whakatane Borough Chambers. Proceedings were warming up nicely when the chairman, Mr J. O. Liddell, intervened. "Its not usual," he said, "for members to get into an argument at an open sitting. That sort of thing is left till later.". His' smile and the subsequent quiet that reigned thereafter proved the effectiveness of his remarks. Farmers , The Primary Production Council draws' final notice to the. advertisement in to-day's isue, regarding topdressing fertiliser. Any farmer wishing to make ah appeal should see that it is. lodged with the Secretary of the Fertiliser Committee not later than May Ist post date. Regarding applications for farm labour: Form N.S. 209 may be had at any money order office. A large number of farmers and farm workers are to be released fom the army to assist in maintaining primary production. If labour is required early attention should be given to the matter, aa the Manpower Officer is now making the necessary arrangement. The forms when completed should be passed to the nearest committee-man of the Council.
