First Claims?
The fact that some military reservists residing in Central Hawke's Bay had received official notice that they were likely to be mobilised shortly, and asking them to volunteer for work in coal mines instead, Avas disclosed at the monthly meeting of the Patangata County Council. The engineer, Mr J. S- Coles, reported that a surfaceman, employed by the council had received such a notice. "I intend to appeal l'or the retention of his services," said Mr Coles. "If he is not required by the Armed Forces, It think we have got a claim for his services equal to that of the coal mines."
