APRIL FOOL'S DANCE

GAY OTAKIRI EVENING

LOCAL MEN HONOURED

A hard-up dance organised by the Farewell and Welcome Home Conn mittec turned out a great success, the hall being filled to capacity. The "hard-up element" was particularly noticeable in the decorations, these being newspaper streamers and branches with pieces of pink Free Lance cover as flowers, the whole being very effective. At midnight these same' streamers were all.dropped on the dancers during a black out dance. The. committee functioned in both ! its Farewell and Welcome Home capacity, Seaman D. Mcl'saac was farewelled by the district and Pte Code was welcomed home. Messrs Kidegely and W. Murray conveyed the good wishes of the residents to the guests of the evening, Mr Murray making the presentation to Seaman Mclsaac. Miss J. Chambers on behalf of the Ladies' Committee presented Pte Code with a warm pullover. A substantial presentation will be made to the latter on his official discharge. Dancers stepped to the lively music supplied by the Gaiety Boys Orchestra, Mr Lord acting as M.C. Monte (Jarlos were won by Seaman Mclsaac and Miss Massey. Prizes for hard-up costumes were: Best lady, Mrs Peck; Gent's, Mr L. Costall and most original, Mrs Cristall. Mrs Cristall's frock proved a valuably subject for a competition—i guessing the number of patches. Mrs Foote and Mrs Missen tied for this' (409 patches). Mrs Cobden won the -chocolates and Mr Jordon the iced cake presented by Mrs King. Special feature of supper was hot savaloy and potatoes boiled in their jackets—a very popular item with the womenfolk. The singing of Auld Lang Syne, followed by the National Anthem, brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
