WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE MEETING

The Whalcatane Women's Institute held their monthly meeting at the Methodist Hall on Tuesday, April 4th. Mrs V. M. Stewart presided over a g.ood attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Institute song and all members read the Aspirations. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and eonfirmed. A letter was read from Mrs Alan Martin thanking members for letter and box of flower 1 ;. Mrs Grozier and Mrs Cairns were appointed delegates for the District Federation annual meeting on Wednesday, the 12th instant. Mrs Stewart read extracts from the president's letter and a very appropriate piece of poetry "Are You an Active Member or do' You Just Belong." As the Garden Circlc had arranged the programme Mfs C'rozicr convenor presided for that part of the proceedings. Mrs Miller gave an interesting talk on the Panama Canal and its history. Mrs Breckon ably demonstrated the arranging of floral baskets which was much appreciated. The Roll Call "Uses of Lemons" was well responded to. A wall com-* petition "Jumbled Flowers" was won by Mrs Sutcliffe. The Garden Circle meets on Tuesday 18th April at Mrs Stewart's and the Arts and Crafts on the 19tli April. The points prizes of the. previous year were presented to Mrs Hannah and Mr,s Mulholland. The winning competitions for the afternoon were as follows: Jam jar flowers, Mrs, Attwood 1; Mrs Stewart 2. Three Guinea Golds, Mrs Sloane 1; 2. Three onions, Mrs 1; King 2. The Garden Circle was held at Mrs Crozier's residence on March 21. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed and the balance sheet for the year ending February 1944 was read and adopted. Seasonal readings on the work in the garden for the month was well responded to, while Mrs Larsen demonstrated the growing of carnations from cuttings. A seed competition was won by Mrs Larsen. The, competitions for the month were: *A' Collection of flowers, Mrs Stewart 1; Mrs Mulholland 2. 'B' Three potatoes, Mrs Murphy ' and Mrs Mulholland tied. Afternoon tea was served and a pleasant afternoon brought to a close.
