JUNIOR CLUB PROSPECTS

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

The recent surge of activity in the Whakatane Rowing Club was encouraged further last Thursday, when a special meeting of members was called to discuss the future ■programme, and to elect, a Junior Com-# mittee to .direct Lhc affairs of the club. The Club President, Mr Hay ward, opened the meeting, welcoming several new members, and praising the keenness which showed itself in the number of, crews on the water each night. He pointed out to the young rowers the club's indebtedness toj Messrs R. Morpeth and .T. Gattsclie, without, whose encouragement and assistance no rowing would haves been possible this year. He emphasised the advantages of rowing as a sport, and the benefit to> physical development which resulted, which wguld be of great value tin the future life of every young man. Before proceeding witli the election of officers. Mr Huyward said that it was intended to elect a temporary committee to carry on for the remainder of the. season, and business would be put 011 a permanent footing at the annual meeting sometime about September. A new member of the Manage-* ment Committee, Mr A* G. Fisher, was elected, and then a resolution which was carried unanimously, was proposed by Mr Hay ward. Pt was that the Management Committee as set up by the Citizens Committee be empowered to control the Unance of the club, the junior officers, and to act on all matters pertaining to the general working of the club. 1 The election resulted as follows.:— Club Captain, W. Rivett; Vice-Cap-tain, G. Dines; Secretary-Treasurer, R. King; Committee, P. Moore, L. Stewart, E. Hunt, A. Moore, C. Ranby, J. Maxwell. A subscription of. 7/6 was fixed for the remainder of the season. Mr R. Morpeth stressed the responsibilit5 r which was placed on the shoulders of the active members to look after the club property, and he? 4 asked them to obey the orders of their recently elected officers in their own and the shed's interests. When closing the meeting Mr Hayward suggested to the incoming committee, that, they should meet rc-> gularly and as soon as possible make all arrangements for the forthcoming race for the J. D. Rivett trophies, for which four crews - would! be in keen competition.
