Sulphur-laden Stream

According to lishermen recently returned from Lake Taupo. the iishing in the Tongariro River is likely to be. oil for some time owing to pollution by sulphur from an outcrop of Ruapehu, states "The Post's" Manawatu correspondent. Heavy rains, have discoloured the river, but while travelling over the Desert road these iishennen noticed that a stream running from the mountain was looking unusually white. The water appeared to be heavily charged with sulphur. As the stream discharged into the Tongariri they think that the- fishing will be affected for some time. Dog Chain Shortage The shortage of dog chains was the subject of a branch remit reeeived by the Auckland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union at its meeting on March 15. One. member suggested that the matter w;t>" trivial, but Mr H. Johnstone (Wafkato) said that it was an important one to many farmers. Dogs, he said, were continually wandering away and getting into trouble, owing to not being on the chain. Makeshift chains without swivels and ropes, he pointed out, were use less. It was decided to make inquiries on the subject from the appAOpriate quarter.
