CHURCHILL

Sir,—lt appears Hint there is an under current of villilication in certain quarters* directed against me for my study of Mr Win.stone Churchill as a Maori Chief. I am informed that a lady of some standing in the town last Friday made .some derogatory misleading and childish comments on both myself for painting the picture and oil Mrs Thomas for .allowing it to be displayed in her window. To Mrs Thomas I apologise not for the picture but. because the lady has de-» cided to buy her "Beacon" somewhere else as a reprisal. For myself I am desolated that I' never obtained permission from the lady to paint the picture, but would like to point out that if 1 wanted to paint a study of Judas Jseariot climbing the North Pole, that is entirely my business. The picture was painted under a suggestion and for a specific purpose and the general opinion is that it is a good job. In case this certain lady is ignorant of the fact I: would like to inform her that both His Majesty the King and Winston Churchill when on visits, to America were made Chiefs of Red Indian tribes and. photographed in full re-> galia. If the ex-lady is so discomforted about the "undignified discourteous and impudent. v painting** and longs to suppress it, I will sell it to her. She can then either hang; it in the bedroom, bathroom, washhouse or outhouse or burn it and thus experience that warm glow of having done her little bit to uphold the old traditions. Yours etc.. CHAS. E. GRIFFITHS.
