RESCUE OF P.W.D. EMPLOYEE INCIDENT AT TE WHAITI But for the prompt action of a Maori labourer, a serious tragedy might have resulted in the Te Whaiti district. A report received stated that Jack Ohlson, ail cmplo3 r ee of the Public Works Department at Te Whaiti, •while- working on Hood damage in the district was hurled into the Whininaki River by a large bounder.
Blasting operations were being carried out and Mr Ohlson, who was standing with Ills back to the river was a little way from the scene of operations*. However, a boulder came rolling towards him and struck him on. the leg, throwing lfim into the river, which was running in high flood. A Maori employee who had witnessed. the accident, promptly dived ijnto the raging water and managed to bring the victim back to the bank. Mr Ohlson was taken to the Rotorua Public Hospital suffering from severe leg injuries.
