BOOKS FOR THE FORCES
HOSPITALS in the Pacific war zone are described as being seriously short of suitable reading matter and recreational games for the patients. As a result of this position the New Zealand Red Cross Society has undertaken to institute a Dominion-wide collection. Whakatane's branch of this organisation will be active during the present week and as our sick and wounded men in the Pacific area are apt to be overlooked, and we feel that it is but necesary to draw the attention of the public generally to the need for a generous and prompt response to be forthcoming. An effort will be made to institute a house to house collection, but those who desire to and can be of more direct assistance are asked to co-operate by leaving their dona-* tions at Dillicar's garage before the week-end. The types of reading matter required will be novels, magazines, digests, etc. Games such as draughts, chess, jig-saw puzzles, etc. are bound to be popular.
