CHARGE OF RECEIVING
YOUNG MAN FACES COURT
MFSSIiNG TYRES TRACED
Tyres which had been illegally removed from the store of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company and l also from Messrs Armstrongs Garage, Whakatane, were traced' to the car owned by Leo Trevor Simpson, of Edgecumfoe, who faced the Whakatane Court last Tuesday on two Separate charges of receiving, the more serious counts of theft being withdrawn. Simpson who was. charged with the receiving of three tyres (one from Armstrongs and the others from the Dairy Company) pleaded guilty.
Detective Waterson who prosecuted, stated that the Dairy Company, alter a elieck-up had revealed that seventeen truck and car tyres were missing, to the total A T al ue. of £15)5 18s 6d. Suspicion fell on the accused, when tyres similar to some of the missing ones were seen on his car. He denied maintaining that he had bought them from a person unknown. There: was nothing to show how the store, tyres came to be missing. Willi regard to the tyres missing from, the garage, Detective Waterson said that accused had been employed by Messrs Armstrongs Ltd. for three months during which time a car with very old tyres was sold to him. It was known that his apiilication to the Tyre Controller had been turned down and when the. new tyres were seen on his ear, again he was suspected. His jjlea of guilty to receiving one. of these tyres bore out the contention that lie had been implicated. Mr Barry, who defended, said that lie had to admit that accused had known that the tyres* had been dishonestly obtained, but at the same time, he contended that he had been more foolish than criminal. He had been easily led by the man who inr tcrvicwed him and had purchased the tyres at £4 10s each. He urged that he be admitted to probation for a term. The Magistrate said he could not concur to the latter suggestion in view of accused's second lapse when he had again purchased, the tyre from Armstrongs. He would be lined £10 on the first charge and £5 on the second. An order would also be made for the return of the tyres-
