THE HOUSING PROBLEM
MR W. SULLIVAN'S QUERY m\l STER APPRO.\ (:HKn A question relating to the housing shortage was asked' the Minister of Housing by Mr W. Sulliivan, National M.P. for Bay of Plenty, in the House of Representatives. Mr Sullivan asked the Minister to give instructions that in districts where materials and manpower exceeded the requirements for essential building works, and' where a definite housing shortage existed, permits requiredl for the building of homes be issued' by the local authority without reference to the district building controller. Further, that a reasonable allocation of buildiing materials be - allowed to country and town disr tricts. The present permit system caused much delay, he said, and! in no way assisted, in the provision of homes. If country districts* and towns were to be further dfenuded of materials there would naturally follow increasedl transfers of men from country to city.
