CENTRAL PLAYING AREA

SCHEME FOR DOMAIN

BUS IX ESSMENS J >ISCUSSION

The suggested playing area at the Domain entrance as! a central point for child recreation was fully discussed at the last meeting of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce last week. T't was pointed out by the secretary that the matter had been sponsored by the Domain Board but that an application to the Borough Council for financial assistance the furnishing of apparently had been turned down. Mr A. J. Canning contended that the proper way to raise money for such a purpose was by public subscription. Mr G. Brabant (who is chairman of the. Domain Board) said that the grounds would be made available j providing the finance.- could be j found. It was the Board's, hope to one day lay the whole area out. as a ( recreation ground for all types, of < sport. This: would probably be yos- j sible to realise, when the two Show I Committees amalgamated and shift- < ed the Winter Show Buildings to j the Domain. When that occurred the whole layout of the; grounds ] would be under reconsideration. - Common Sports Hall Mr Hall hoped that when the new j scheme did take place, possibly after . the Avar, that there Avould be ample! ; playing space made available. He . suggested too that all sporting and social organisations should where possible tie. lip to the hcav building making it a common base. ; Mr Morpeth was against putting off the idea of a children's playing area till after the : Avar. "What about, shifting all the apparatus from the town playing area to the Domain?" queried Mr Fergus-, son. "That might be a good idea," agreed, Mr Canning. Mr King contended that the central area Avas very badly abused by adults and Avas in a most undesirable position. The apparatus AA*as continually smashed by irresponsiblcs of 17 and 18 years. Mr Creeke. agreed strongly Avith the suggestion to shift the swings, see suavs and round-abouts bodily to the Domain. On the motion of Mr Ramson it was agreed that, in the eA'ent oi' the Domain Board going ahead with the proposal, the. Chamber sponsor a public subscription list to assist towards equipping the recreation area.
