A.T.C. DANCE

SUCCESSFUL EVENING In spite of the fact that the Gaiety Boys who had been engaged for the night were, unable- to attend owing to, the roads being lloodcd, the Air Training Corps dance held on Friday evening was highly successful. Word that the band would be unable to pass through the Hood, did not. come through till well after 9.30, and those in charge found themselves somewhat on the horns of a dilemma. However,, a local band consisting of Messrs Ted Harden (that syncopating swingster who plays the piano, and stands uu to render a vocal at the same time), Stew Pine and Wallie Lysaght who were- good enough to help get the A.T.G. out of a nasty hole, was commissioned, and they made the evening go with a swing from start to finish. Dancing continued until a late hour, and everyone enjoyed themselves to the utmost. The highlight of the evening was the abundance of novelty dances, which kept the dancers continually 1 on their toes with expectation. Gordon Tippett, who has just been repatriated from Germany, vocalised several of the numbers, much to the delight of. his audience , and although his singing could liardiy be called of operatic standard, it nevertheless went, over very well. Half way through the evening, Pilot Officer Whitworth, Officer Commanding of the Air Training Corps, took the opportunity to thank those present on behalf of the boys for their attendance at the dance. The popularity of the orchestra was shown by a long round of applause when P/O Whitworth thanked them, and he went on to say that it looked as if they would need to look no further than Whakatane for the music for future A.T.C. dunces. Continuing, lie stated, that the dance »liad been put on not by himself, but by a committee of boys under Pilot Officer Haynes, and that the takings had been altogether satisfactory. In conclusion, he thanked Mrs Dallas and the W.W.S.A. for running the supper, and also all those who had. made donations or gifts towards the dance. The .successful couples in the novj elty (lances were as under: Monte Carlo—Miss Nancy Shaw and MiTrevor Savage. Monte Carlo —Mr G. Boswell iiiid Miss H. Cave. Monte Carlo —Mr T. O'Flaherty and Mi.ss T'ocker. Lucky Spot—Mr J. Moore and. Mrs Pritchard. Lucky Spot—Miss N. Atkinson and Mr Ferguson. Lucky Leap Yettr DanceMiss Vera Harrison and Mr G. Moore. A speeial vote of thanks is due to Mr "Tally" Atkinson, Avho voluntarily performed the duties of M.C. as it was due largely to his efforts that the (lance got under way at the beginning when there was no orchestra, and kept moving at high speed throughout the. evening. Extras were played by Miss Prince, Mr Bell and Mr (j. Wardlaw.
