BADLY NEEDED
BEAUTIFICATION SOCIETY
SCOPE IN WITAKA.TANE
"I remember when I first came into Whakatane, being struck with the wonderful' opportunities which existed for a Beautifying 1 Society," said 1 Mr R. Jordan at the meeting of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce last Thursday. He went on to give reasons why something should 1 be done to stimulate an interest in making the town more attractive than it was 1 .
Mentioning the cliff, face south of Commerce Street, he said, that in its present state it was very bidding and drab. At comparatively little expense it could be planted with suitable trees and, the unsightr ly patches covered with a scarlet ice-plant, which would make all the difference to the town. Mr A. J. Canning spoke of the wonderful work of the old Beautifying Society under Dr. Wadmore and urged that something should bo done to carry on the work. Mr G. A. Brabant contended that a steady policy of beautilicction should be followed up so that a certain number of trees was planted annually., V. The meeting decidcd to appoint Mr J. Creeke convener to the existing Beautifying Sub-commitec which in turn would come lip for re-elec- ' tion at all subsequent annual meetings. j
