COUNCIL'S EFFORTS TO CONSERVE

PLEA FOR POST TIMHER

Im spite of the most pressing representations, the Commissioner of State Forests, has notified Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., that the request of the ' Whakatane County Council to reserve a large proportion of the Te Whaiti totara forest must be declined. The possibilities- of utilising this bush area as a potential source of post supplies for farmers on the Rangitaiki Plains was made the subject of a deputation to the Council last Tuesday, when Messrs Lynds and Hardcastlc, the latter :i ! returned soldier who was seeking to re-establish the industry, waited on the Council seeking its help. Mr Hardcastlc explained, that under the present agreement whereby' only dead and damaged trees were available made it not worth while to carry on. The Council decided to approach Messrs Sullivan and Sims, Al.P.'s, again asking them to convey to the Commissioner the Council's regret at not haviing succeedcd in reserving the forest and asking that all unmillable timber in the area named be made availably for milling to Mr Hardcastlc who would, be willing to utilise it to relieve, the serious post .shortage on the Rangitaiki Plains.
