Tobacco Cultivation
The area licensed ior the production of the 1i)l4 tobacco crop in New Zealand was acres in excess of last season's area, stated the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan recently, referring to several matters dealt with at a meeting of the Tobacco Board. The Minister announced that a lev}' of one-eighth of a penny per pound had been struck on all leaf of the 15)11 harvest sold or to be sold for manufacture into tobacco and cigarettes. In the three previous seasons the levy had been one-sixth of a penny a pound. The levy was used by the Tobacco Board to assist in llnancing the. tobacco research programme and in various other ways to foster and develop the industry. Mr Sullivan also indicated that satisfactory arrangements had been made for the installation at the tobacco research station of the board's stationary soil sterilising plant. Growers could now arrange to have the. soil for their seed beds .steam sterilised at a nominal cost under the supervision of the tobacco research officer.
