Campbell, the Under-Secretary of thc Dcpartment. The send-off took the lorm of an evening in which several items by members of the Ilotorua statT were presented.

Tojo the Spud Something new in the way of a "Victors'" potato was unearthed a few days ago by Mi* E. Armstrong. The potato., which was quite a large one, had grown in the lorm ol a perfect representation of the arms, head and torso of a man. The addition of a face and legs bv Mr Armstrong created a humorous .though surprisingly life-like image of General Tojo.

Rental Cycles

With the influx of American Servicemen on leave into Whakatane, the trade in the hire of bicycles has boomed considerably. A rental car soon, eats up its" ration of petiol, but the distance covered, by a rental bicycle is controlled only by the energy of its rider, and the American certainly seems to have plenty. The cost to hire, a cycle is. somewhere in the neighbourhood of a .shilling per hour depending on the time for which it is required but all tilings included, cycling certainly seems fast becoming a popular way to cover a .strange country in a limited time.

A.T.C. Dance

The lir.st of a series of dances to be. lickl by No. '.i~> Squadron of the Air Training Corps will 'be held on Friday 2.> th of this month. This, it must be understood, is not just an ordinary commonplace dance. The orchestra is: one of the best in the district, having been specially engaged from Opotiki for the occasion. To the older ones let it. be known that the dancing avLII not be all ''Jive," but a good selection of modern and old-time dancing, enabling all to take part. All details in connection with the. promotion of the dance tire well advanced and prospects point to the event being one of the most outstanding features of the social calendar.

Motorists Take Heed'

The Traffic Department wishes lo draw the attention of motorists •whose number plates are rusty or broken to the that these must be either repainted or renewed. With the nou-issue of liccnee plates for several years owing to war demands, the old plates have in some cases become unreadable, and these, together with windscreen stickers which have become torn or mutilated, must be replaced or made readable. Carrying out a 'check over the past week the Traffic Department has noted a number of motorists whose plates fail to comply with the regulations anil, other car owners whose plates; are not up to standard should see to them immediately.

Council's Interest in Local Cricket

Over the week-end, His, Worship the Mayor gave further evidence of his interest in local cricket affairs, when, accompanied by Mrs Barry and their children he was a spectator at the Representative match played in the. Domain. Cricketers generally, were pleased to see him.
