THE announcement that a further batch of eighteen men back from the Middle East will be arriving home in the Whakatane district to-day, furnishes a further opportunity for the public to show its appreciation of and gratitude to men of the famous Eighth Army. Elsewhere the Mayor's message urges as many as possible to attend the train when it arrives, and we feel that we can wholly rely on the public response to the various receptions which are bound to follow.
Cricketers Who Have Passed On An impressive interlude in the course of the recent complimentary dinner held in the Commercial Hotel to mark the winning of the AttriT Cup by the Rangitaiki Association, was the tribute to absent cricketers —those who had left the wicket and. male their last over, which was made by Mr P. Anaru, of Rotoma. In asking all present to. si and in silence, he remarked that cricketers from all parts of the Empire iad now mads the supreme sacrifice in giving their lives for King and Country in the present war.
Local Mosquito Boat Local interest has been aroused by the sight of a small (a very small) boat which has made its appearance alongside the wharf. It may surprise readers' to know that it is to make the perilous journey to Tauranga by .sea sometime this week, irrespective of weather conditions. The owner, ail ex-ser-viceman of Tauranga has every confide nee in his. small craft, and says i)iat with a properly fitted marine engine and gear-box its maximum speed should be not less than <35 knots.
