OPENING OF NEW PAVILION

LOCAL CLUB'S ENTERPRISE!

About'thirty cricketers and representatives of all clubs were present last week at the opening of the pavilion built on the Domain by the Whakatane United Cricket Club. Air J. 1). Rivett opened the proceedings by a speech in which he expressed his regret that it was not possible to invite a greater number of supporters from the district. " 1 his', he said, "was due to the fact that the evening was essential!y a club affair, and also the pavilion ■which was rather limited in size made il necessary to confine the guests as nearly as possible, to players and club officials." Air W. Sullivan, AI.P. congratulated the club on its resource and energy in providing such facilities lor the sport at u time when most spoiting bodies were at a standstill, and stated that with such a fine beginning it augured. avcll for the future of the game in Whakatane. Mr L. 11. Spring, President of the Cricket Association, then spoke congratulating the club on its splendid effort and pointed out the benetit it had provided for the future of cricket and young players generally in Whakatane. He also mentioned the enthusiasm shown and the help given by the Whakatane United Cricket Club President who had always been a tower of strength to local cricket.

A toast ay as then drunk )o the cricketers overseas, the hope being expressed that it Avould. not ho long before they were again in the field. Mr Smart proposed a toast to "Kindred Sports" which was replied to by Mr W. Henderson; Mr liockin to Affiliated Clubs (Mr A. G. Fisher on behalf of A.T.C. and Mr D. Seott on behalf of Central) and Mr Rigdcn to the Ladies' Committee (Mr Wm. McKcnzie). Musical: items were presented by Mr T. Atkinson, Mr M. Barrowman and Mr W. Henderson Jr., and a duet by ]\lessrs McKenzie and Smart.
