TAXI DRIVERS "BASHED"
AFRAID TO REPORT
A mass meeting of Sydney taxi men was told that 23 night drivers had been "basiled"' in the past five months. The meeting which was called by the Road Transport Workers' Union, opposed licensing of women taxi drivers. The secretary of the union, Mr 8., Piatt, said that many night 'drivers had been sandbagged, shot, or stabbed. They had been victims of drunken or vicious civilians or servicemen. I'n some instances, men had been attacked when they argued with passengers who would not pay their fares, said; Mr Piatt. The drivers were afraid to report these assaults to the police. ''One man who reported an assault to the police was hired again by thugs," Mr Piatt said. "He was taken to a quiet placc. and kicked senseless'. He spent seven days in hospital."
