THE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

UNLIKE most other social organisations in the town which have a habit of commencing life with a great show of enthusiasm and then proceedings to gradually fade out of the picture, the Whakatane Caledonian Society, the annual meeting of which occurs this evening has gone from strength to strength. In spite of tfye war restrictions, in spite of the dearth of young members and the great handicaps imposed upon travel, the Society has continued to flourish in a manner which is little short of uncanny. Still possessed of a reasonably strong Pipe Band, it continues to give service on every conceivable occasion and during the progress of the war years has taken the broad progressive view, that there was no need to curtail its social activities, rather to increase and enhance them. The Society now possesses its own hall, and has created its own fully uniformed Scout troop of which it can feel justly proud. Not content with this it has created and fostered a Scout Pipe Band which is the only one of its kind in the Dominion. We extend our warmest congratulations to the Society which has not only become a strong social force in the town but has set up units within its organisation which are a definite public asset.
