BRILLIANT AUCKLAND DISPLAY

MISS PEARL SMEDLEY'S PUPILS

From Auckland comcs; an account of an interesting afternoon of ballot given on November 20 last at His Majesty's Theatre, by SO chiklrcn, the pupils of Pearl Smedley of Takapuna, late Whakatane District High School, as a result of. which £44 5s 7cl Mas handed to the Free Kindergarten Association. The programme given to a capacity house included ''The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe," "The. Skaters" in which two ballets. Miss Smedley appeared, "Red Riding Hood" ballet and. other fairy tales, "The Victorian Bathers" duet, and solos by advanced students. Perhaps the most beautiful were ''The Jewel Ballet," about 21 children representing Sapphires, Amythysts, Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds, and "The. Sleeping Princess" pallet, in three, scenes, "The Christening," "The Attic" and "The Awakening." The colouring of the frocks blended to make scenes of great beauty. In. all the ballets the children performed their steps with neatness and precision . Amongst tire audience were noticed ill* and Mrs Arthur Read and daughter, Mrs Paul Ernst, Mrs G. S. Bullen, Mrs Fennery, Mrs Fox, Miss Ray Grose, M.iss Joyce Thompson and Mr Clem Brebner.
