England's Salvage Effort Two milion battle suits were made from a year's collection of rags in England as well as over 2000 acres of felt, thousands of ovcrcoats and •charts. The. 450 tons of railings which used to enclose Hyde Park •are onw 16 anti-aircraft guns, and the 107,000 tons of waste melal collected are the equivalent of over 40,000 Bofors guns. Rubber salvage has yielded 240,000 tons and waste paper 3,000.000 tons. One ton of paper equals 300 mortar shell carriers. London has so far collected four out of its target of five million books. More than 50,000 tons of tram lines have been melted down and the. liner Majestic yielded 40,000 tons of metal.
