WORK OF LOCAL SQUADRON

V UNI FORMED UNI T

With the Whakatane Squadron of the A.T.C. now on a newly organised basis, instructional activities have been proceeding along a welt defined course. Special attention is being paid to Squadron drill whilst lectures on aircraft recognition by a competent instructor have been made available.

With the arrival of the latest equipment from headquarters, instruction on engine maintenance by Mr J. Bowering and practice, in .sending and, receiving morse code under Mr Maxwell have been proceeding and each is fast becoming proficient on these subjects.

The official strength of the unit is now 58 and of these nearly twothirds have been medically boarded and X-rayed.

Arrangements have been made for every cadet who wishes during the next two months to visit a leading R.N.Z.A.F. Station and the majority of the Squadron have availed themselves of this opportunity.

Now with practically every cadet in uniform and the remainder to be uif.formed ' before the New "Year, public interest h;is once more been aroused, and it is hoped that the present strength of 58 will shortly reach the total of a hundred which is the present objective of the Squadron.

The following cadets are to attend an N.C.O.'s course, at Ohakea in connection with the Air Training Corps*: ACI lowering, J. N.; AC2 Snelling, li.; AC2 Gartshore, G.

Cadet Mead G. H. of the Whakatane Squadron of the A.T.C. has been selected, to attend a Physical Training course of instruction at Whenuapai commencing oh December 13.

Mr S. Whitworth and Mr F. V. C. Haines, have now received official intimation of their appointment as acting Pilot Officers in the local A.T.C. and have received their commissions.
