Miss 15. Parkinson and Messrs S. ami J. Kppingstal of. Opotiki, while spending the week-end at Whakatane were the guests of Mrs W. Hancock, IS Merritt Street •
The Whakatane County Council decided at its last meeting to take the necessary steps to appoint Mr 1). C. Butler to the council to tilt the vacancy tor the Omataroa riding left open by the resignation of Mr J. Ct. Cliff McCulloch.
Mr A. J. Canning, president of the local branch of the St. John Ambulance Association has received word to the effect, that Sir Hcaton Rhodes who is Knight Commander of the order in New Zealand, with his official party will be 'vis'iting Whakatane on Tuesday next December 7th. Arrangements l'or a parade and inspection of the local units of the order are now in hand.
A motion of sympathy to Cr Les Lux ton in the loss of his wife was passed at the November meeting of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday in the usual manner. Referring to the late Mrs Luxton the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, said that she had taken a very prominent part in the district's 1 activities particularly the Plunket Society. When the Patriotic organisation was formed after the outbreak of war, Mrs Luxton had been one of the first to offer her services and had represented the Awaken Ward on the. central executive. She would be sadly missed and all councillors would join in extending their deepest sympathy.
