A TRIBUTE TO THE LADIES

WHEN it is considered that in one day recently (Friday, November 26th to be exact) the ladies of this town were responsible for the raising of over £160 in the interests of the Plunket Society and Red Cross and Patriotic organisations, it must be realised just what a potent force the wo}* menfolk of any community can be when properly organised and inspired. We wonder how many businessmen give even a passing thought to the effort which is made almost daily by some section or other of the ladies of this town to stock and staff the now celebrated 'Red Cross' shop. Despite the difficulties imposed by rationing the main ingredients (sugar and butter) the shop continues to display, cakes, scones and all classes of cookery in the interests of the ideal for which our womenfolk are working. To do this, in these days means a genuine sacrifice on the part of the much-harried housewife and their continued effort in the face of all handicaps makes the remarkable success of the 'shop' turnover fully deserved. It does more than that; it arouses in the public mind a deep and unstinted admit ation for the magnificent and unselfish service which is being performed by ladies who are mainly home makers, right here in Whakatane itself.
