A TORPEDO'S "BRAIN"
Six thousand separate parts go to the making of an intricate and deadly torpedo, and, the total cost is £2.000. Only about one-sixth of the. spaee. is taken up by the explosive charge. The rest is occupied by a four-eylinder hot air radial engine., compressed air cylinders and delicate machinery. A torpedo speeding on its deadly course behaves almost as if a man were inside, controlling its ton and a half of steel and 500 pounds of high explosive. The "brains" of a "tin lish" consist of the: hydrostatic Aalve, whieli is so sensitive to water pressure that it automatically resists every effort of the torpedo to dive; and a gyroscope, "which ensures a true course towards the target.
