SCOUT AWARD
CERTIFICATE OF MERIT
'action of thrlk local boys
The secretary of the NjZ. Boy Scout Association, Mr Fred McIvor, has notified that His Excellency, the Governor General, acting in his capacity as Dominion Chief Scout, has' been pleased to approve the ward of the Certificate of Merit to the Whakatane Citizens Boy Scout Troop, for the prompt action of three of their members, Kelvin Crozier, John Crozier and Leslie Good'all, in saving two young children from drowning in the Whakatane River in January last., Tlic.se lliree boys, while silting on the bank of the Whakatane Tidal llivcr after a swim noticed what appeared to be two buftdles of .clotli.es (drifting by, under the water. They •rushed, in, and dragged out what {happened to be two children in an ai>parcntly drowned condition. AVhile one rushed for a Doctor, the other two immediately applied artificial as taught them in their Scout training. By the time the Doctor one child had recovered Bless, while the other was just showing signs of . recovering. Lt is the opinion of the Doctor that, if these boys had not known just what to do and how to do it, the two children would definitely have been beyond help, by the time ha arrived. Although the water was not more than feet deep, and there is no suggestion of real danger to the lads themselves, they had considerable •difficulty in making the rescue, owing to a swift outgoing tide.
