LUNCH HOUR CLOSING
REPRESENTATIONS have been made to us by district farmers, who claim that the habit of so many of the Whakatane businessmen closing their premises during the lunch hour constitutes a serious inconvenience to them. This has been particularly apparent during the harvesting season when it is so often necessary to make periodic trips into town for all manner of reasons connected with what all farmers recognise as the busiest part of the year. To find half the town closed, has often, as our informant puts it, been the cause of long delays at a most vital period, when the time could ill be spared. The BEACON has been requested to bring the matter forward mainly with a view to 1 bringing it to the notice of local shop owners and if possible, for the haymaking season at any rate, of having the shops remain open for the luncheon period. The request is little enough in view of the grave difficulties, with which farmers now have to contend and we feel that their claims in this respect will be recognised and probably met.-
