CHRISTMAS INVITATIONS
FOR INVALID AMERICANS
WHAKATANE'S HOSPITALITY
In a letter to Mrs J. E. Winstone, Secretary of the Eastern Bay of Plenty centre of the N.Z. Red Cross Society, Miss Ruth Unland Assistant Field Director of the American Red Cross, refers to the recent holiday spent by invalided American service men in Whakatane.
She says:—
The boys enjoyed their holiday in your district and we would love to send another group uji. or even separate patients, as they become available. The main difficulty is, of course, the length of travelling time. We can only send men Avho are. so fit that the strain of the journey will not prevent their benefitting from the change of climate.
Wc. are hoping to send a number of patients away in the near future and, also, wc are keen to make some j>reparation for possible needs at Christmas. I wonder whether any of your people, would like to extend an invitation for the Christmas period. I am A-ery a veil aware; that I am asking a great deal, because until less than a fortnight before Christmas t shall be quite unable to judge whether any patients. Avill be available. Naturally the doctors here do not like to commit themselA'CS too far in advance,, but it Avould .be of enormous' help to me, as I am sure you Avill understand, to have a I'cav addresses in various parts of the country which could be looked on as definite Christmas invitations.
