GARBAGE COLLECTION

COMMENTS BY CHAIRMAN

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

AG LTATION

In the course of his annual report to the adjourned annual meeting of the Wliakatane. Chamber of Commerce last Wednesday evening the president, Mr C. F. Thomas said:—

"This matter has been continuously before the Chamber and we Avould like to think that Ave. haA*e made a little progress. A deputation Avaitcd upon the City Fathers early in! the year and came away quite hopeful, but as it turned out rather prematurely so. The question of garbage cans appeared to present the first stumbling block but f Avas able to quote the Council for the requisite number in the required guage. From reports of subsequent Coun« oil meetings it Avould, appear- that even these were not satisfactory. I uiid.ers.tand that the Borough Coun-: cil has made certain attempts to obtain a truck but as neither it nor the cans have so> far put in an appearance and this month is November I» fear that the fly and rat menace this summer* Avill be just as serious, if not more so than last. I expressed a Avish last year that the Chamber would not rest until it saw this Borough brought into line with others more progressive. U reiterate those remarks."

Mr A. J. Canning said that the Borough Council was doing its best to meet the Chamber in this connection hut the difficulty now was to get a truck. He was sure however that the collection of rubbish throughout the Borough would be put in hand at some time or other.

"You remind me of the man with the one-stringed fiddle, rejoined the chairman with a smile. "He could only play one tune so he played it all the time."
