WHAKATANE GOLF CLUB

CLOSING DAY

The Whakatane Golf Club brought its 19413 season to a close 1 last Saturday, November .1 '■>. The (lay avhs (me and pleasant and the couvsc. was a picture of delight with its mown fairways and greens and Hie surrounding country covered with yellow flowers and green leaves of the lupins. It is a great pity that golf ceases just, v/lien the links are 1 practically at its best. The competition was in uie i'orm of a mixed Canadian foursomes over !) holes, the best scores • being the following: Mrs Suckling and Greager (Ist) 17 —10— 'Al: Mrs Whitehead and Powdrcll (2nd) 4.(>—-<)—37; Mr and Mrs Combes (Ist) 10—8% —37%; Miss Cochrane and lUirstall -Hi —8^4 —37 :! 4. In passing, 15 fours took part in the above competition. As the players drifted in from their rounds,, afternoon tea was ready for them and this was catered for by a willing band of ladies' who had the comfort and well being of j all players at heart. After this pleasant diversion, the next attraction was the approach and putt and driving competitions. The: ladies had their own areas and the men their own. The winners of these competitions are named, in their respective sections in the list of prize, winners appended hereafter. At the finish of the events, the long -awaited for prize giving function was .staged. Prize Giving In the absence of the president, Mr L. Lux ton, vice-president .Mr S. Spence, presfcled. As a prelude to his speech he ; briefly referred to the sad loss sustained by Mr Lux ton and family in their bereavement. Mrs Luxton was a member of the ciub besides being a respective and worthy citizen of the community, and her death would be felt by every one. As a mark of respect a minute's silence was observed. Mi' Spence made the usual appropriate speech suitable for the occasion. Welcome to all visitors, regret at the close of the golf season, and every hope for the. same keen support of the club next season.'A hearty vote of thanks to all those who contributed to the success of the club this season—especially the ladies who attended to the catering etc.. the greens committee, and members who kindly offered transport to those without conveyance. His plea for assistance on behalf of the club was a masterly effort, and from all accounts one that is likely to bear fruit with success. After he; had ■covered the ground thoroughly, the prizes to all competition winners was then proceeded with, Mr-Spence kindly consenting to officiate at this function also.
