A DESPONDENT MAORI

INCIiDFNT AT WAIOTAHI

Before. Mr E. L. Walton. S.M.|, in the Opotiki Court a Maori labourer, aged 21 years, of Waiotahi, was charged that on October 25 at. Opotiki he attempted to commit suicide. Defendant pleaded, guilty. Sergeant Lsbister said that defendant wa.s on leave from Home Guard camp at. Matata. He had an argument with a girl with whom he had been living,, and attempted to commit suicide by severing the main artery in his arm. "When he was, found lie was in quite a serious condition, having lost a considerable-' amount of blood. This was the. third time defendant had -committed a similar act, but the. attempt had not previously been so serious. The. girl's parents were afraid of what might, happen to the girl if defendant were released. Defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon, and to report to the police if and when they deemed it necessary.
