GATHERING AT AWAKERI

MR AND MRS COLIN DUNCAN*

A well-attended dance was, held in the Awaken Hall on the 4tlx inst. when Mr and Mrs Colin Duncan were farewelled upon their departure tor Pairere near Matamata. Associated with the people of the district as sponsors.of the function was tlie Whakatane Squadron of the Mounted, Home. Guard. Bright music was provided by Messrs Lysaght,. Davis and Broad while Mr Coll Macdonald was, as usual, a very capable M.C. Mrs T. Fowell kindly played extras. During the evening Mr A. Barr, on behalf of the Awakeri people, wished Mr and Mrs Duncan the best of health and prosperity in their new sphere. He said that both had given good service to the district and would be greatly missed. Mr Duncan's position in connection with patriotic and sporting affairs would be very hard to fill. On handing the guests a substantial cheque Mr Barr expressed the wish that when normal conditions reigned some permanent reminder ot Awakeri might be pro-cured. In a very humorous speech Mr H. Haeusle.r spoke on behalf of the Mounteds from whom. he conveyed to Mr and Mrs Duncan the very best wishes. I}n reply Mr Duncan thanked the jjeople of Awakeri and the. Mounted Squadron Aery much for the splendid function tlhit had been arranged in their honour. He regretted in many ways their departure but said that they would probably visit the district on many future, occasions. He would carry away with him memories of the wonderful co-opcra-tion shown by all at the big patriotic sports meeting earlier in the year. Dancing proceeded until a late hour when a very happy function: terminated with the. singing of. "Auld Lang Syne."
