Rationing Successful "The rationing of clothing, footwear and household linen has been in operation some 10 months and the scheme can be said to have opcrated very successfully," states the annual report of the Wellington Drapers', Clothiers', Mercers' and Boot Retailers' Association. "Members are fortunate in that the New Zealand scheme pre-sents- a minimum of inconvcnicncc to traders,, having regard to the somewhat complicated systems operating in other countries The continuation of the prc.sent system, however, will depend on traders honouring their obligations. under the regulations and strictly adhering to the spirit as well as the letter of. the legislation." Serviceman. Fatally Injured l A serious accident occurred in the State Forestry area, Te Whaiti, on Wednesday when Frank Rhodes, aged 30 years, of Second N.Z.E.F, ; who recently returned to the Dominion on furlough from the Middle East and has, in the meantime been working in the forestry, was severe-, ly crushed between logs. The New Cemetery The search for a suitable name for the new cemetery on the hills above the Ohope. approach continues. The Works Committep to the Borough Council suggested the name as Whakatane Hill Cemetery, but such a title failed to meet with the Council's approval. "Why not Mokorua?" asked Cr Armstrong. "We thought of that," said the Mayor, "but that was considered misleading to anyone living outside the dis J trict." Other councillors joined in with bright proposals but it was finally decided to hold, the matter over for a month and to see if any more suitable titles presented themselves in the interim. Wednesday's Fire Call The fire siren had Whakatane by the ears last Wednesday afternoon when despite the heavy rain a large crowd gathered under the verandahs at the eastern end of the Strand to watch with that stolid dog-like curiosity the smoke clouds that bellied out of the main entrance of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson's premises. Firexnen with that quick busir nessli'ke precision that marks the organisation the world, over ran the first lead into the entrance, but it was not long before 'Super' Stewart signalled the 'all over,' for before the water reached the nozzle the pile of papers which had taken fire in the office had been put out mainly with bare hands —or at least it so appeared to us by the look of Mr A. J. Parry's eyebrows and Mr Langridge's arms.
