NOW IN ITALY
WORD FROM LOCAL SOLDIER "KAWI'" DIVISION ENGAGED In a letter to his wife (daughter of Mr A. J. Parry). Warrant Officer Les Young, of Whakatane, writes : I ani writing this to you from an olive grove somewhere in Italy. We arrived, here a few days ago alter a pleasant and uneventful sea voyage. The country and the people appear very poverty stricken, but that is only to be expected after so many years of war. Food outside of army rations (which at the moment are pretty ghastly) is absolutely with the exception of grapes, which abound in profusion, and one can wander through the vineyards and eat to the heart's content. Like Greece, the wine is the national beverage, but jjcrsonally I can't take it. 1 hope after a little more practice to acquire a taste. Before closing I. want you to lookout for a photograph of yours trulj', as L was taken by the N.Z. war correspondent as one ol' the first "Free New Zealanders" ashore in Italy.
