HINDU OWNED SHOPS
Sir,—«T desire to object to the remarks passed at a meeting of the Whakatane County Council when considering ray application for a permit to erect a shop at Te Teko as reported in your issue of the 2nd inst. These remarks are a slur on the Hindus who arc. British subjects and many of whom both in the last war and in the present war have fought and are fighting with the British Armies alongside their comrades in arms from England, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and other parts of the Empire. I protest very strongly against the insulting remarks passed about hovels and living conditions, as It doubt if any of the councillors have seen my store and home at Ruatahuna of which I am very proud. I invite the councillors to inspect my store at Ruatahuna at any time they desire. This is the only store I own and I have no interest in the stores at To Whaiti or Murupara. The remarks passed are a gratuitous insult to a large body of British subjects many ol' whom have made tiie supreme .sacrifice in the war and many of Avhom have been decorated for valour. Yours etc., ; R. DAHYA, Ruatahuna, 5/11/43.
