LOG HAULAGE
REQUEST FROM PAPER MILLS MAINTENANCE OF HO.VD Writing the Wliakatanc County Council at its meeting last Tuesday Uic manager of the Wliakatanc Paper Mills mentioned the permit for log haulage issued by the Council on the 27th August, and asked for reconsideration of Clauses (8) and (0). With the Mill's seven day a week operation, it might on occasions be necessary to cart over the roads after heavy rain, or even in wet weather if production was to be maintained. It was obvious that in the interests of maintaining supplies to the Mill, the; Company was going to use its best efforts- to adequately maintain the road in a condition whereunder it was capable of use in wet weather or after heavy rain, and it was certainly not going to jeopardise production by so cutting the road up under such conditions as to make it impassable. The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, slated that at his direction the Whakatane Paper Mills Ltd. had been advised that the provisions of Clause (8) which stated that no cartage should be undertaken during Avet weather or after rain when the road was in a.puggy condition, were inserted in every agreement Avhieh applied to extraordinary timber road cartage. In the case of Whakatane Paper Mills Ltd. the Council appreciated, the co-operation it had received. from the Company and the Company was asked to accept the Council's assurance that it would reasonably interpret Clause (8) and would not, without good, and s-ulTi-eicnt reason hamper the Company's operations. | The Council agreed to confirm the chairman's action.
