CHILDREN'S GALA

FANCY DRESS PARADE PARADE FOLK DANCING DISPLAYS SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL GATHERING If the nations of the world could fraternise as easily as the tiny tots who represented them in the colourful grand marches and fancy dress displays in the Winter Show Hall last Friday, there would be no need for a League of Nations and war would be outlawed for all time. These brilliant assemblies took the form of the first school children's fancy dress dance staged for over three years and their splendid success will probably dictate the fulfilment of the widely expressed hope that hereafter they will be held annually war or no Avar. The event took the form of two distinct sessions one for the inianls in the afternoon and the other for the standards and High, School pupils in the evening, in all well over 700 children were catered for bearing out tha headmaster's observation that Whakatane was now the third largest schools of its kind in the Dominion. The afternoon's activities were, largely in the hands of Miss Tait, infant, mistress to whom the highest praise is due for the training and control of the tiny tots, who iiv dresses of all descriptions took the floor and executed folk dances, rounds and games in a charming and very effective manner. The huge task of giving 300 children afternoon tea was once again in the hand.s of a committee of Whakatane's indomitable, lady caterers who lived up to their already wonderful reputation. In the evening the hall was once again thronged and the scenes on the floor were even more picturesque as the whole assembly went through the figures of the grand march and proceeded to give some attractive displays of folk dances. Addressing the. large gathering the headmaster, Mr 1. Hubbard, welcomed the parents and thanked, them for their practical support, both by attending and in costuming the children. He paid special tribute to the school staff, members of which had gone to considerable pains to ensure the success of the event. With a roll of over 700 Whakatane, he said, could now be'described as one of the. largest schools on the Board's register and the surprising fact was that it still continued to grow. The proceeds from the Fancy Dress Ball would go to the school improvement funds. He mentioned the effort which was now under consideration by the. committee for the laying out of a concrete area for a recreation and playing section upon wlii eh besides games, the children could be given physical culture and demonstrations of a useful kind, and concluded by thanking particularly tire ladies catering committee and the Caledonian Society for foregoing its dance. The children vacated the (lootafter a tasty supper had been served and the. remainder of the evening was spent in modern dancing for the general public. !
