MAORI'S OFFENCE "You have given me a difficult problemi," said the magistrate, Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Court last Tuesday when Mr R. F. Smith pleaded 1 strongly on behalf of a Maori defendant who was charged with assisting in the illegal Supply of liquor. The defendant, Maunga liou, was described by the police as the owner of a supply of liquor totalling two 10 gallon kegs and 8 quart bottles which were discovered, on a lorry in Commerce Street 011 the evening of August 7th last. When accosted he had freely admitted ownership but refused to .say Avhe.re he had procured the liquor from. Air R., E. Smith said, that accused was rejected from the army on account of an ailment. He had purchased the liquor lor others who intended to use it at a party in honour of members of the. Maori Battalion recently returned from He was- in particularly poor cirfumslances and was still an outpatient of the Whakatane hospital. A fine of 20s and, costs 23s was imposed.
