STRAYING STOCK
MAORI OWNERS PROSECUTED INSPECTOR'S BUSY MONTH The growing nuisance of stock on the public roads has giyen rise to widespread complaints throughout the Whakatane County. The efforts of the Transport and County Inspectors to put it down was evidenced by the large number of prosecutions brought forward at the October sitting of the Magistrate's Court, before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M. Nepia Hona who was charged with allowing two horses to wander at large on the Galatea Road, To Toko, on September 2nd was fined 20s and costs 30s. Paul Teni for permitting three draught horses, to stray at Te Teko on August 18th was ihitd 20s and costs 17s, Mason Tauwera the owner of a cow and 3 calves which were found at large at Poroporo on August oth was lined 20s and costs 33s (id. A second offence for permitting two Jersey bulls and two heifers to stray in the. same locality resulted in a fine of £2 and costs. 25s (id. For permitting eight, horses and two foals to stray on July 29th last Romana Ratima who said that the animals escaped from their paddock when he was away at a reception to members of the Maori Battalion was fined 20s and costs 31s (id.
