RECONSIDERATION ASKED
REMOVAL OF CARCASES FROM
HEADS
HARBOUR BOARD CRITICISED
In answei' to the Whakatane Borough Council's request that the Harbour Board should take steps to remove any carcases of dead beasts washed up at. the Heads following Hood periods, the Board has formally notified that it will be prepared to undertake such work providing the bare, running costs are met by the Borough Council. It was pointed out that in the event of the Board's launch being used the charge, would be £1 per hour which was* for steaming time only.. The letter gave rise to severe comment at the Council meeting last Monday when it . was unanimously decided to ask the Board to reconsider its decision in the interests of public health and local- body goodwill. Cr Shapley said he/ could not understand. the Board's attitude-. When asked to do a little favour in a matter which was as much its responsibility as the Borough's it had sought to impose a charge. Cr Creekc described the action as childish., In other centres lie understood the Harbour Boards accepted the whole responsibility for the waterfront below high water mark. He did not know under what' regulations the Board was operating, but it seemed ridiculous to try and capitalise. «'i, duty of this nature which was practically the Board's own job. After all the ratepayers paid one way or the other. He suggested that when writing the clerk should point out the number of small obligcinents which the. Borough was carrying out on the Board's behalf.
