WEED SEEDS

IN SACK OF BARLEY SHOULD BE BURNED Seed pods taken from a sack of Australian barley Avhich was produced by Cr J. S. Duxfield. at the August meeting of the Matamata County Council have been identified as the. result of a letter sent to the Department of. Agriculture, Wellington, by a AA*ell-known Hamilton journalist. The Department ruled that the seed was that of the. snail medie (medieago sentellata),, Avhich Avas a native of the Mediterranean, Australia and the' Ukraine. The plant had no economic value,, and Avas a member of \lie family of clover knoAvn as spotted burr and tooth-: burn clover. The Department advised that the seed should not be alloAved to become established and should be burned.
