OPENING OF SEASON GAME WITH W AIM AN A Whakatane United Cricket Club opened their season on Sunday with a friendly match against Waimana at the Waimana grounds under sunny conditions. Although there were some heavy showers in the afternoon a good day's sport was; enjoyed by both teams. Waimana batted first and compiled 178 runs. The feature of the innings was the chanceless display of Harry Wardlaw who scored 61 runs in a particularly good innings. V. Miller and N. Menzies contributed. 28 and 26 respectively. H. Wardlaw played through 8 wickets before being caught out. Bowling for Whakatane Gayler secured 5 wickets for 32 runs whilst veteran Les Bennett, collected 3 for 22 runs, and showed also a safe pair of hands in the field. The Whakatane innings opened disastrously with four players back in the pavilion before the side opened its account.- Wm. Addison's first over disposed of Spring and McKcnzie but fortunately Gayler stopped the rot and contributed 28 in safe style. T. Martin hit out to knock up 33 runs 'in good time and the innings clostccl with 90 runs on the board. Tho Waimana ladies, dispensed afternoon tea in their usual prolific style, and further showers necessitated the. closing of the game.
