FLOODING AND SLIPS L OVER THREE INCHES OF RASN The heavy rain storm experienced in the Eastern Bay of Plenty over the week-end was! responsible for numerous slips ■and road blockages in the Whakatane district, where 3.22 inches were measured for the two days. -Inland reports state that surface "water was seen in record quan--tities over the Edgeeumbe and Awakeri districts' where drains were bank high continuously ■throughout the week-end and 1 ■where there is stilil a great deal to be turned off. Waimana Gorge Blocked l The Waimana Gorge was blocked •earl3 T on Sunday by a massive slip which held traffic up till 9.30 a.m. on Monday morning. The slip was , the largest of several in the gorge •and bore, a substantial piece of the Hand bank away. P.W.D. workmen Host no time in clearing it sufficiently to allow traffic through. The river as was; to be cxpected -also flooded the Whakatane-Taneatua ■ih'ighway,, but did not prevent traffic ■from going through and maintaining contact. Minor Ohope Slips r lhe road, to the Ohope approach liad more slips than has been seen on that stretch for many years. Many of them stretched a good halfway across the road but none were sufficient to hold up traffic. At Wainui the road has been badly blocked and it is anticipated that some days will be required lie fore it is fully cleared.
