A CLEAN ELECTION

WHATEVER the intensity of the individual attitude of party followers during the present election campaign it can be said with pride that in this district at least there has been observed throughout an excellent spirit of sportsmanship and fairness by both sides. This is a direct tribute to the broadness and understanding of the average persons viewpoint, and from what we have gathered is in pleasing contrast to the: spleen and senseless personalities which marred certain past elections. This state of affairs is clean interpretation of democratic methods for while tho spirit of rivalry is as keen as ever, the less desirable elements, so often present at an election are conspicuous by their absence,, leaving no room for cheap pettiness or the ventilation of personal spite between party members.

Identity of Bird Visitor In answer to an enquirer regarding the identity of a bird which last week was seen flitting about his residence at. Awakeri and which resembled a fantail, we have had two replies from persons who were interested enough to give us a ring. The first is that it is the whitebreasted tit. or miromiro (commonly known as the Tomtit) which is rare in these parts and the second, that it is the barred-tit, which is fairly well known in the South Island. We trust that our enquirer will draw some satisfaction from the above.

Booth for Absentee Voters Arrangements have been made for a special polling booth in the Whakatane County Council Chambers on Saturday next (election day) for the benefit of absentee, soldiers and other voters., Persons who fall into this category are asked to make a point of remembering this.
